God’s Love in Action—Agape

What Is Agape Love?

Have you ever stopped to think about what the Bible really means when it talks about God’s love?

Agape is a word that appears repeatedly in the Bible, describing the highest form of love: selfless, unconditional, and deeply sacrificial. Unlike other forms of love, agape isn’t rooted in emotion or sentimentality. It’s not just a feeling but a choice to put others first, even when it’s difficult or inconvenient.  It is active, intentional, and rooted in a commitment to seek the well-being of others, even at a cost to ourselves. It’s the love God demonstrates for us every daya love so deep, so pure, it gives without expecting anything in return. That’s God. That’s agape.

In 1 John 4:8, we read, “God is love.” The word used for love here is agape, emphasizing that the very essence of God is this self-giving love.

It’s the love that sent Jesus to the cross to redeem us, and it’s the love that we are called to extend to others.

Agape in the Teachings of Jesus

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He didn’t just give one answer—He gave two: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart…” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). These two commands are inseparable, like two sides of the same coin. According to Jesus, loving God means loving others. And loving others? That means action.

Agape love isn’t just for those who love us back. Jesus’ teachings push us to love the unlovable, forgive the unforgivable, and serve without expecting anything in return. It’s about showing up, time and time again, with a heart full of grace and hands ready to serve. This love reflects the very heart of God.

Living Out Agape Love

Since we are called to love, how do we live out agape love in our everyday lives?

Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

  • Small Acts of Kindness: From lending a listening ear to surprising someone with a thoughtful gift, these small gestures reflect God’s love in tangible ways. Share a smile, hold the door open, or write a note of encouragement. These little actions ripple outward in ways we may never see.

  • Serving Others: Volunteering time, sharing resources, or offering support to those who are struggling are powerful ways to live out agape.  Volunteer at a local shelter, help a neighbor in need, or lend a listening ear to a friend who’s struggling. Serving reflects God’s love in a real way.

  • Forgiving Freely: Jesus modeled ultimate forgiveness on the cross, and agape calls us to extend that same grace, even when it’s hard. Letting go of bitterness or resentment is one of the hardest things we’re called to do—and yet, it’s one of the most powerful expressions of agape.

  • Encouraging & Sharing Generously: Whether it’s your time, resources, or talents, giving with an open heart mirrors God’s generosity toward us. A kind word, a prayer, or pat on the back for encouragement can make a profound impact on someone’s day.

God’s Love in Action: Agape & Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is often associated with romantic love, but it can also be an opportunity to reflect on and share agape love—God’s love in action. This season is a wonderful time to remind someone they are cherished—not just by you, but by God.  This kind of love transforms lives because it flows from the Source of all love. By stepping into God’s mission of love, we can bring light, comfort, and encouragement to those who may be longing for connection or hope.

One way to put agape into action is through intentional gifts that carry a deeper meaning. When we give with the intention of reflecting God’s love, we remind others that they are cherished—not just by us, but by Him.  Maybe it’s sending an encouraging note to a faraway friend, surprising a single mom with a small gift, or simply reminding someone they are not forgotten. Agape love is about showing up for others and reminding them of their worth.

A Call to Love Like Jesus

Agape is love in its purest, most transformative form. It’s a love that transforms us from the inside out. Agape isn’t a love we keep to ourselves. It’s the kind of love that inspires us and compels us to step into God’s mission to bring light and hope to the world. A love that has the power to change everything!

As we celebrate love this season, let’s embrace the kind of love Jesus modeled for us—a love that gives, serves, and heals.

May we not only receive God’s agape love but also live it out in our interactions, relationships, and communities.

After all, love is not just something we feel—it’s something we do.
